5 reasons your computer is slow (and how to fix it)
Lams IT Solutions
Your computer is responding slowly — now what?
The five most common causes of a slow computer are: insufficient RAM, a full hard drive, malware, outdated drivers, and too many startup programs. In most cases, you can fix the problem yourself in under an hour by following the steps below.
1. Insufficient RAM
If you open multiple programs simultaneously, your working memory (RAM) may be too small. Check via Task Manager (Windows) or Activity Monitor (Mac) how much memory is in use. If it's consistently above 80%, an upgrade is worthwhile.
2. Full hard drive
A drive that's more than 85-90% full noticeably slows down the system. Delete unnecessary files or consider an external drive or cloud storage.
3. Malware or viruses
Malicious software runs in the background and consumes resources. Run a thorough scan with a reliable antivirus program.
4. Outdated software or drivers
Outdated drivers and operating system updates can cause compatibility issues. Keep Windows or macOS up to date.
5. Startup programs
Too many programs that launch automatically at startup significantly slow down your computer. Manage them via Task Manager > Startup (Windows).
