Microsoft Copilot: what it is and how it helps you at work

Lams IT Solutions

AI built into your familiar Microsoft environment

Microsoft Copilot is an AI assistant that works directly within Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Teams. It summarises emails, writes documents, analyses spreadsheets and notes action items from meetings — without switching platforms. The add-on costs 30 dollars per user per month on top of an existing Microsoft 365 subscription.

What can Copilot actually do?

In Outlook

  • Summarise emails: one click to understand a long email thread.
  • Draft replies based on your instructions.
  • Schedule meetings and analyse calendars.
  • In Word

  • Generate a first draft of a document from a prompt.
  • Rewrite, shorten or formalise existing text.
  • Summarise documents for a quick overview.
  • In Excel

  • Analyse data and identify patterns.
  • Suggest and explain formulas.
  • Automatically create charts and pivot tables.
  • In PowerPoint

  • Generate a presentation from a Word document or text description.
  • Suggest design improvements.
  • In Teams

  • Summarise meetings live and note action items.
  • Catch up on missed meetings via an AI-generated summary.
  • Licence and availability

Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365 is available as an add-on licence on top of an existing Microsoft 365 Business or Enterprise subscription. The price is currently 30 dollars per user per month. For personal use, a limited free version is available via Bing and the Windows search bar.

    Limitations to keep in mind

  • Copilot works best with well-structured data and clear prompts.
  • Output should always be reviewed — errors and hallucinations are possible.
  • Sensitive business data stays within your Microsoft tenant, but discuss the privacy policy with your IT manager.
