Improve your home wifi: 7 tips for a stronger connection

Better wifi — more than just a faster router
The three quickest ways to improve your wifi: place your router centrally at eye level, switch to the 5 GHz band for nearby devices, and use a mesh system for multi-storey homes. Below are all seven tips that significantly improve most home networks — without expensive hardware.
1. Restart your router regularly
Sounds simple, but it works. Many routers benefit from a weekly restart. Set up an automatic restart in your router settings.
2. Position your router centrally
Place the router as centrally as possible in your home, at eye level, away from walls and metal objects. Walls, floors and large appliances block the signal.
3. Use the 5 GHz band
Modern routers offer two frequencies: 2.4 GHz (range, less speed) and 5 GHz (faster, less range). Use 5 GHz for devices close to the router.
4. Check the number of connected devices
Every connected smartphone, tablet, TV or smart home device consumes bandwidth. Remove unknown or unused devices from your network.
5. Update your router's firmware
Manufacturers regularly release updates that improve performance and security. Check your router's administration interface.
6. Consider a mesh system
For large homes or multi-storey buildings, a mesh network (such as Google Nest or Eero) provides uniform, strong coverage.
7. Use a powerline adapter as an alternative
Via the existing electrical wiring, you can route internet connections through your home. Handy when wifi isn't an option.
